Math department

KMS math dept has 4 general education and 1 resource class for each grade level.

The state-wide middle school curriculum, GO MATH, is implemented through a "workshop model," beginning with a short opening to hook/engage students, followed by individual/group work time, ending in a closing discussion for reflection or sharing of work by the students.

Math classrooms, along with RTI (response to intervention) classes provide students with some AVID strategies, including Cornell note-taking, inquiry/questioning skills, and tutoring to support a more rigorous level of study. <http://www.avid.org/>

Many teachers have gone through professional development to encourage students literacy & oral fluency skills in small group or whole class discussion, by displaying word walls to promote the use of academic language, notebook/journals, portfolios and/or student-led conferences.

Standards-based bulletin boards with various levels of student work, rubrics, & commentary help students determine and track their own progress.

With the new GO MATH curriculum, teachers will have more opportunities to engage students with more use technology, go deeper into conceptual understanding of topics/skills & improve communication skills that will be needed for the 21st century world of work and the new state testing format for common core standards. <http://www.hmhco.com/country/us/tennessee/math/go-math-6-8#!prettyPhoto/0/>
