The Kalakaua Hi-Lites was established in 1985 as Kalakaua Middle School's chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The Kalakaua Hi-Lites have been devoted to service in both the school and the community. Some examples of our service projects are our monthly read-a-loud to kindergartners at Kalihi Kai Elementary School, volunteering our time at the Convalescent Center of Honolulu, making Thanksgiving cards and crafts for the residents at Beverly Manor Convalescent Home, volunteering at the open-house PTSO meetings, and making leis or welcoming the guest speakers who come to our school for career and vocational lab day.

In 2005 the Kalakaua Hi-Lites celebrated its 20th year here at Kalakaua Middle School. We are still very proud of the achievements of our students and their continued commitment to excellence. To be a member of the Kalakaua Hi-Lites, the student must have good grades (be on the honor roll), be committed to service, show good leadership qualities, show good citizenship qualities, and have great character. To find out more please contact Mr. Fung in the counselor's office.
